Hello everyone,

Wow!! 93 paid registrations in just three short weeks! I am humbled by your enthusiasm. We’re working hard to make sure your MINI Vacation coming up in just 10 short weeks is a fun one. A few of the things we’re planning require a head count upfront, so the earlier you sign up the better. Remember, pre-registration rates go up to $30 per car after April 1. If you’re planning on making the trip, make sure you register soon.

This just in – we’ve reached our minimum for the Chartered Dam Tour. Actually, 52 folks are already signed up. It’s going to be a blast. Remember, if you want to go on this tour, you MUST pre-register. We CANNOT accept reservations when you arrive in Vegas for AMVIV.

Also, for those of you that haven’t heard, that sweet scream of a deal Station Casinos was offering… it’s done! They sold out on that gift card special in less than 24 hours. Evidently, a lot of folks jumped on that right away. So fast, I didn’t even get one. Hopefully, someone will hook me up.

One more reminder. May 1 the discounted rates at Palace Station expire. In case you missed it, here’s are the room rates for AMVIV8:

Courtyard Rooms – $39.00 per night Tuesday through Thursday and Sunday, $59.00 per night Friday & Saturday

Tower Rooms – $59.00 per night Tuesday through Thursday and Sunday, $89.00 per night Friday & Saturday

All room rates are also subject to room tax and the special-for-our-event $4.95 hotel service fee.

Use the Special Web Booking Link or call 1-800-634-3101 and use reservation ID PCIAMV8 and identify yourself as an AMVIV or Sin City MINI Club attendee.

If you don’t use the Special Web Booking Link or the telephone number and code listed above, you won’t get the rate. So, please – when booking your hotel rooms for AMVIV8 use the link we’ve provided or call the number and use the code. Your choice. Any problems or issues booking your room, please let us know.

I know there’s more I should be telling you, but my mind’s gone blank. It will have to wait until next time.

Looking forward to seeing all of you in May!

THE PROBLEM
During the design process of our “ZippeeShade” which have designed exclusively for the Mini Cooper, I encountered a slight problem on my test vehicle, a 2003 Mini Cooper S. The problem I was facing was what seemed to be some kind of short circuit. The sunroof was working fine until one day without warning it opened half way and when I tried to close it, nothing happened, it would not close. When I depressed the switch to close the sunroof, all you can hear was a clicking noise from the relay. I located the fuse to see if it was blown, and to my surprise it wasn’t. Now I was confused and even worse I was concerned that I would have to drive around with the sunroof stuck half way open. Luckily I went on Google to do some research and found tips on closing the sunroof manually. At the rear of your car there should be a Mini Cooper Tool Bag, which will contain an Allen wrench hand crank used to connect directly to the sunroof motor to manually close your sunroof. You can access your sunroof motor by removing the clock from the headliner and you will see the Allen wrench screw used to manually open and close the sunroof.

THE SOLUTION

After many hours of troubleshooting I found the cause of my sunroof failure. It was due to a short circuit in the diode, located inside the motor housing. This diode was causing the motor to short out, rendering the motor inoperable. The fix was very simple, all I did was open the motor and use a pair of wire cutters to snip the diode wire disconnecting it and instantly the motor worked again. This was actually a really easy fix. Here are my step by step instructions along with photographs of what I had documented.

TOOLS NEEDED

- Digital Volt Ohm Meter
- #25 Torx Star Driver
- Flathead & Phillips Screwdrivers
- Pair of Pliers
- Wire Cutters
- Teflon White Lithium Grease or Some kind of Lubricant like WD40

STEP 1: Remove the following plastic trim rings on both front and back sunroof, by pulling on the trim ring inward towards the center of the sunroof. This trim ring is held in place by pressure clips. Be sure to disconnect any wires attached to the trim ring located on the front sunroof, after you have removed it from the headliner.

STEP 2: Remove both sun visors from the headliner. Start by removing the clip for the sun visor by using a thin small flathead screwdriver to pry open the plastic cover in order to access the Phillips head screw. Use a flathead screwdriver to do the same for the round plugs located on the sun visor hinge. Once you have unscrewed the sun visor, unclip the wiring harness.

STEP 3: Remove the clock from the headliner. Just wiggle from front to back and you should be able to pull it down from the headliner. Unplug it from the wire harness.

STEP 4: Remove the rear view mirror from the headliner. In order to do this you have to rotate the base of this mirror 90deg in either direction and it will unclip from the solid steel base located underneath the headliner. Unplug it from the wire harness.

STEP 5: With the rear view mirror off, it is very important that you remove the small black plastic rivet from the headliner using a small thin flathead screwdriver, located directly underneath where the mirror was located. Note: if you forget to remove this you cannot remove the headliner.

STEP 6: Remove the dome light housing from the headliner. In order to do this you have to pry the clear lens from the housing. Underneath you will find the Phillips screw to remove the housing. Unplug it from the wire harness.

STEP 7: Remove the “@h Sh!t Handles” from the headliner. In order to do this you have to pry the plastic covers from the sides of the handles. Underneath you will find the Phillips screw to remove it.

STEP 8: Remove the rear vent cover from the headliner. You will find this cover located at the rear of your car. To remove this just pry it from the headliner.

STEP 9: After you removed the cover, you will find a white trim ring in which it was connected to. To remove this you will notice that there are two clips on each side, that will need to be separated. Use a flathead screwdriver and some light pressure and separate both top and bottom halves.

STEP 10: Remove the weather stripping from both rear hatch and from the drivers/passengers door jamb.

STEP 11: Remove the seatbelt cover located on both center pillars. With the weather stripping removed, you can separate the plastic panel directly underneath the seatbelt cover. Just apply medium pressure by pulling this panel away from the door jamb. Behind this plastic panel you will find a Phillips Screw, remove it and the cover should slide down.

STEP 12: Located at the back of the car you will see the plastic covers holding up the headliner. To remove, all you have to do is pry them from the top separating them from the pressure clips. It won’t be necessary to remove them completely, just pull them down enough to get the headliner to drop down.

STEP 13: Located at the front of the car you will see the plastic covers holding up the headliner near the windshield. It won’t be necessary to remove these covers. Just slide the headliner back towards the rear of the car and the headliner should drop down.

STEP 14: Slide the headliner out of the car by bending it slightly and pulling it out of either door, as shown in the photos.Note: you will need to remove the headrest from both seats.

STEP 15: **Very Important** Before attempting to remove the motor from the sunroof, you must close the sunroof completely using an allen wrench and manually turning the center screw, located in the center of the motor housing.**IMPORTANT DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP**

STEP 16: Remove the motor by using your #25 Torx Screwdriver to loosen the 3 screws on the motor housing. Disconnect from the wiring harness.

STEP 17: With the motor removed from the car, you can pry off the plastic housing by separating the pressure clips as seen in the photos.

STEP 18: If you look at the end cap of the motor housing, you will see (4) metal corners bent at an angle to hold the end cap on. All you have to do is take your pliers and bend them in the opposite direction so that you can remove the end cap. Then use a flathead screwdriver to pry the end cap off.

STEP 19: Pull the center shaft out from the motor case.

STEP 20: With the end cap removed and separated from the shaft, use your Digital Ohm Meter to test both outside terminals to see if there is any resistance. If you find that there is Zero resistance at the terminals, then that would indicate that your circuit is closed when it should be open, this means your capacitor has a short in it. Locate the capacitor on the end cap. Use a pair of wire cutters to separate the connection, as shown in the photos. Be sure to position it so that it doesn’t reconnect on accident. Use your Ohm Meter to retest both outside terminals again, and you should see that the circuit is now open, and indicates full resistance. This will confirm that you have corrected the problem with the motor.

STEP 21: Now in order to put the shaft back into the motor case, you will need to reconnect the shaft back into the end cap.In order to do so, you will need to use your thin flat screwdriver to move the (2) two spring loaded brushes out of the way, so that the end cap can fit back over the shaft.

STEP 22: Now with both pieces connected, carefully hold them together while you slowly insert the shaft back into the motor case. **Tip: You should place something on the opposite side of the motor case to prevent the gear drive, from the shaft, from sliding through the motor case too quickly. The shaft and motor case are both highly magnetized and will have the tendency to pull the shaft quickly through the motor case. If you allow the shaft to slide too quickly through the motor case, your end cap will become separated from the shaft, and you will have to repeat this step over again.** Don’t forget to seal the end cap properly, before putting the rest of the motor housing back together.

STEP 23: Take some White Lithium Grease and/or WD40 to lube the gear drive on the motor, as well as the rails of the sunroof track, once you get the sunroof working again.

It’s that easy!!! Now just follow all your steps in reverse to reassemble your Mini Cooper and enjoy. I hope this step by step DIY tip helps you to save a small fortune.

God Bless

AMVIV 6 – “A MINI Vacation In Vegas 2009″

I thought AMVIV 6 was a tremendous success. Being a native to Las Vegas and participating in many car show events in years past, this was one event that we had no idea even existed until George Marsh from SCMM.org had casually mentioned it to us, which in retrospect I was glad he did. We had never seen such an awesome gathering of “Die Hard” Mini Cooper enthusiasts. Once arriving at the parking garage of the Palace Station Casino in Las Vegas we drove up to the 4th floor, immediately you can feel the atmosphere change, and in an instant all you can see was row after row of Mini’s, Mini’s and More Mini’s; in every color, every upgrade and every size you can imagine. I was completely blown away. Everyone there was extremely nice and quick to describe their love affair with their Mini. This event was more than a car show; it was truly a gathering of a unique sub-culture catering to everything MINI. We were fortunate enough to have been a vendor here, amongst all the other specialty vendors attending this event. We seen everything from MINI Cooper Ankle Socks, Greeting Cards, Vintage Memorabilia, to ZippeeShade Sunroof Shades exclusively for MINI’s (sorry a shameless plug) and even a vendor selling engine upgrades and installing them on the spot. Yes, I must admit, we got caught up in all of the hype and had Way Motor Sport install a Supercharger Pulley on my 2003 MCS, while my wife purchased MINI Cooper ankle socks and matching pin from CoolMiniStuff.com. We had a blast.

We can’t wait to do it all over again. By Saturday we were a little sad that it all was coming to an end. We are very thankful to everyone who visited the ZippeeGear.com booth and supported our vision, the feedback we received was incredible. As for AMVIV 7 we will definitely be there. I want to congratulate Larry Simpson and the rest of the crew at Sin City MINI Club for doing such an awesome job organizing this event and activities. We look forward to AMVIV 7 and we will definitely be a participating vendor in future events for many years to come.

Here are some photos from this event:

Miniology is the science and study of all things Mini.
More specifically, this refers to automobiles, mostly the small British car market consisting of “Mini” (classic era 1959-2000, as produced by a variety of makers, including Austin, Morris, BMC, Leyland, Riley, Woosley, Rover), “MINI” (new era, 2002 model year+ as produced by BMW)

We started this site near the end of the last year, as an outreach from our successful video podcast (”vodcast”) which you may find on YouTube and Google Video as “StarLord Mini Podcast” — there were a number of great commercial sites out there for news and information about the Mini/MINI, but we wanted a new site geared specifically towards clubs, their events, and the people; that is, created for and by enthusiasts.

Something interesting started to happen. Along with the regular Mini clubs in the Northern California area (where the majority of StarLord’s podcasts were recorded), we started cross-pollinating with other car enthusiast groups. Now, we find that classic Mini and new MINI events are shared with owners of other small classic cars, such as the smaller MGs and Triumphs, as well newer cars such as the Nissan 350Z, Mazda Miata, Smart ForTwo, etc. However, we are still primarily Mini/MINI-oriented, so the news and events you find on Miniology will be largely focused (I won’t say biased, because we aren’t, really) in that direction.

Miniology, a non-profit and charitable organization, consists of dedicated volunteers who collaborate together on the site, blogs, video and audio podcasts, as well a forthcoming public-access TV show.

Click here to download PDF file

In order for you Zippee Shade to fit properly

you must follow these instructions

Step 1:

Once you have removed your ZippeeShade™ from it’s carrying case, you may notice that the UV Resistant fabric is wrinkled.

Step 2:

We recommend that you take a standard steam iron, and set it to the lowest setting yet allowing the steam to work. First iron the ZippeeShade™ on the silver side, so that you will not damage the printed logo. Once you have smoothed out all the wrinkles, you can turn the ZippeeShade™ over, and begin ironing the black side.

Step 3:

Be sure to iron the loose fabric that surrounds the frame.

Step 4:

To install the ZippeeShade™, slide back the mesh screen covering you sunroof, and slide the (SOLID SIDE) of ZippeeShade between the glass and mesh screen. For the rear sunroof: the loose fabric should be facing towards the rear hatchback. For the front sunroof: the loose fabric should be facing towards the front windshield.

Step 5:

Take the suction cups and depress them against the glass above.

Step 6:

Take the loose fabric and tuck it into the edges of sunroof trim ring. It’s that easy.

Zippeeshade is hands down, one of the best inventions for the Mini Cooper, Clubman and Countryman. This simple product has saved many heads from getting scorched under the sun. It’s simple design easily unfolds from it’s protective bag and quickly attaches to your sunroof via suction cups. It has a steel wire frame designed to hold the UV fabric to the exact shape of the sunroof opening. The ZippeeShade even stays in place while driving with the sunroof wide open. What a fantastic product….. If you own a MINI and have the dual sunroof’s, you must buy your ZippeeShade today.
